Paying for OpenRouter step by step
Use the card like any foreign bank card:
- Top up on the Credits page: enter an amount, pay by card, credits land immediately.
- A fee applies only when buying credits — 5.5% on the Standard plan; requests cost the same as at the model provider.
- Auto top-up can buy credits from the card whenever the balance hits a threshold.
- Besides cards, OpenRouter officially accepts USDC.
What can go wrong
If the OpenRouter payment fails, it is usually one of these:
- With auto top-up on, charges happen without notice — set a monthly cap or keep a buffer on the card.
- VAT or similar tax may be added to top-ups depending on the billing-address country.
- When the balance hits zero, paid-model requests fail immediately — monitor production integrations.
