Paying for GitHub Copilot step by step
Use the card like any foreign bank card:
- Add the card in GitHub Settings → Billing and licensing → Payment information, where the next charge date is also shown.
- Subscribe on the Copilot page of your account settings — pick Pro, Pro+ or Max and confirm the payment.
- New accounts usually get a Copilot Pro trial, but a payment method is required upfront and billing starts when the trial ends.
- Premium requests beyond the plan are charged to the same card if extra spending is allowed in settings.
What can go wrong
If the GitHub Copilot payment fails, it is usually one of these:
- GitHub Copilot restricts payments and accounts linked to Russia. The card solves payment, not the service's rules.
- GitHub follows US trade controls, so paid features are unavailable in some regions regardless of the card. The card only solves payment.
- Adding a card may trigger a small verification hold — keep a little extra on it.
- If Copilot is assigned by an organization, the organization owner pays; your personal card is not used.
