Paying for Booking.com step by step
Use the card like any foreign bank card:
- How you pay depends on the property and rate. Pay now — Booking or the hotel charges immediately. Pay at the property — the card only guarantees the booking and you pay at check-in.
- When Booking handles payment, the booking details show when you will be charged; sometimes the charge happens closer to arrival.
- Many hotels place a deposit hold on the card at check-in — a pre-authorization released after check-out.
- The hotel may charge in local currency even if the site showed dollars — then the amount depends on the exchange rate.
What can go wrong
If the Booking.com payment fails, it is usually one of these:
- On pay-at-property rates the hotel may test the card with a small hold or ask to see it at check-in — a prepaid rate avoids this with a virtual card.
- If the card is short at the time of a delayed charge, the hotel may cancel the booking.
- Deposit holds are not released instantly — keep a buffer on the card for the whole trip.
