Paying for Xbox step by step
Use the card like any foreign bank card:
- Purchases go through your Microsoft account. Add the card on the Microsoft account site under Payment & billing, or right on the console at first purchase.
- The store region follows the country set on the console or in Windows, and it has to match the country in the card address. For a dollar card the US region makes sense.
- Game Pass is charged automatically every month; the first period is sometimes discounted, then the full price applies.
- Instead of a card you can top up the Microsoft balance with an Xbox gift code.
What can go wrong
If the Xbox payment fails, it is usually one of these:
- Microsoft compares the account country, device region and card address. If they differ, the payment fails or the store asks you to switch regions.
- You can change the account country only once every few months, and an existing Microsoft balance may become unavailable after the switch.
- Xbox codes are regional: a US code will not redeem on an account set to another country.
