Why your local card may not work for bookings
International booking platforms run on Visa and Mastercard, and cards from some countries’ banks simply don’t pass their payment forms. A “no payment now” booking doesn’t always help either: even free rates ask for a card as a guarantee, and the hotel may verify it with a small charge.
Some local services book foreign hotels and accept domestic cards, but the choice is usually narrower and cancellation terms and prices don’t always match what you see on the big platforms. With an international card you choose where to book and pay directly — on the terms of whichever platform suits you.
How holds and deposits work
This is the one thing to understand about hotels. A pre-authorisation isn’t a charge but a block: the bank sets the amount aside, and you can’t spend it until the merchant either captures or releases it. There are two typical moments.
- At booking. The hotel or platform checks the card is valid and sometimes holds the full booking amount until check-in or until the free-cancellation date.
- At check-in. A deposit for the minibar, damage or late checkout. The size depends on the hotel and is usually in the booking terms’ fine print.
How long a hold takes to clear depends on the hotel and the bank and can be several days. Keep a buffer on the card above the cost of the stay, and don’t block the card until the deposit is back.
Booking step by step
The flow is the same on Booking, Airbnb, Agoda and Trip.com — only the payment form details differ.
- Issue a card and move the booking amount onto it, plus a buffer for a possible hold. How to move money from your balance — see this guide.
- Pick a rate. “Pay now” (prepaid) is usually more reliable with a virtual card: everything is charged at once and there are fewer questions at the desk. “Pay at property” means the card only guarantees the booking and you pay on site.
- Fill in the payment form. Name — as in your card details; billing address — in Latin letters, in the card’s issuing country.
- Confirm 3D Secure. The request arrives in the Libermall Card app, not by SMS.
- Save the booking confirmation and check the card transaction in the app.
Common errors and how to fix them
When a platform declines a payment, it’s usually down to small details. Here’s what comes up most:
- “Card declined” right away — check you have enough money including any hold, and that the address is right. Full walkthrough in payment declined.
- Payment stuck on confirmation — open the app; the 3D Secure request is waiting there. If it isn’t, see what to do.
- The charge differs from the price on the site — the hotel charged in its own currency, not the one the platform displayed. That’s conversion, not an error.
- The front desk asks to see the card used for the booking. You can’t physically show a virtual card, so choose prepaid rates or message the hotel in advance to ask how they handle this.
If a hotel insists on plastic, we do offer plastic cards too — see the fees page. For most bookings a virtual card is enough.
Which card to use for hotels
For online bookings a regular virtual card does the job: no verification and the lowest price. The catch: it doesn’t go into a phone wallet, so for paying on site you’ll use the details in the app.
If you want one card for booking and for tapping your phone on the trip, look at the US card: a Mastercard from a US bank with Apple Pay and Google Pay, no verification. Note that non-USD payments cost 1.3%, and hotels usually charge in local currency. Another option is cards for Apple Pay and Google Pay, which require verification.
General advice: keep bookings on a separate card from everyday spending. That way a hotel hold never blocks your dinner.
Cancellations and refunds
A refund for a cancelled booking goes back where the money came from — the same card. Timing depends on the hotel and the platform. While you wait, don’t block the card: let the refund land on a card that’s still active.
Freezing the card for a while, on the other hand, is fine — it’s reversible and protects against unwanted charges. See freezing a card. General booking tips are in the guide to Booking and Airbnb.
